When Belinda Wagner was diagnosed with angiosarcoma, in 2016, she looked for information to help her navigate the challenges that lay ahead. “When I searched online, I found the South African National Cancer Registry (NCR). Although this was a valuable resource, angiosarcoma was not listed at the time,” she explains.
South Africa steps up cancer data gathering
South Africa has begun collecting data on cancer directly from patients for the first time, to help shape national cancer policies and resourcing.
A lack of extensive and detailed data has long been recognised as a barrier to improved cancer care, amid a national and Africa-wide crisis.
According to the World Health Organization, there are around 1.1 million new cancer cases and 700, 000 deaths from cancer in Africa each year.
SA’s cancer data has significant gaps – now patients can help fix it
Cancer patients and other members of the public now have an opportunity to contribute to improving the quality and completeness of cancer data in South Africa. This follows the recent launch of a new patient-led cancer registry. The project is a joint initiative of Living with Cancer (LWC), an NGO, and the existing National Cancer Registry (NCR) housed in the National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD).

In this Cancer Survivors Day broadcast, eNews interviews Belinda Wagner (founder of Living with Cancer) on her journey to creating South Africa’s first patient-led cancer registry. Through her own journey of battling with cancer, Belinda was motivated to establish a platform where cancer patients can get the support they need. The registry provides a powerful community platform for people who have been diagnosed with any type of cancer, and who are in different stages of their cancer journey. The site allows users to capture and track their journey by constantly updating information such as diagnosis, date of diagnosis, stage, and well-being status.
