Welcome to our Living With Cancer podcast series. The aim of these podcasts are to create a space where we can share knowledge, testimony, ask for advice and connect with other people living with cancer. We will be interviewing experts in their field who work with cancer patients pre, during and post their treatment. We will also be interviewing warriors where they will be sharing their own personal journeys with us, hopefully giving hope to anyone who has been newly diagnosed or is struggling with their cancer journey.

Look Good...Feel Better
An interview with Christie Fraser who shares with us how the Look Good…Feel Better team assists cancer patients to look good and feel better. Cancer can rob a patient of their energy, appetite and strength but it need not take away their self-confidence. The Look Good…Feel Better programme is the Cosmetic Industry helping cancer patients, undergoing active treatment, in a practical and positive way. Look Good…Feel Better provides free two-hour beauty workshops through a network of hospitals, and oncology units, specially designed to assist patients to manage the appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, thereby helping to restore their appearance and self-image.

Candice Kushka, a physiotherapist who specialises in oncology rehabilitation and lymphoedema therapy. This podcast provides insights of how physiotherapy greatly impacts anyone that is undergoing a cancer journey. Learn about her experiences working overseas and with many different cancer patients.

Episode 4 - Salomé Meyer & Linda Greeff
Cancer Alliance
This episode includes an interview with Salomé Meyer and Linda Greeff from the Cancer Alliance. They discuss the partnership with The Cancer Alliance and Living With Cancer, their views on how the patient-led cancer registry is vital to enhance the current cancer registry. The data that the LWC patient-led cancer registry collates will be added to the current National Cancer registry to look at cancer incidence and to improve planning for cancer services in South Africa in the long run.

Episode 5 - Dr Gavin Durra
Radiologist with a focus on cancer diagnosis and monitoring
Dr Durra provides some understanding and insight into the world of radiology. Dr Durra explains the different types of test/scans, the process and the various roles during this diagnosis journey. Dr Durra qualified MBChB from the University of Cape Town / Groote Schuur Hospital (UCT/GSH) in 1986 completing his internship there in 1987. This was followed by a 6 month senior house officer (SHO) post in Paediatrics at Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town.

Episode 9 - Caren Martinis
Breast Cancer Warrior Testimony
An interview with Caren Martinis who was diagnosed with breast cancer, a true warrior and an inspiration to us all. Caren shares the emotional rollercoaster that a journey of this nature takes you on. Caren Martinis, a 47-year-old single working mother to her 13-year-old boy, was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2020, originally misdiagnosed with Lupus in the January of the same year. In March 2020 Caren met Dr Carol Benn and it was at this point that her cancer journey started. A tumour was found in her right breast. Post her MRI scans Caren was informed that she would need a complete nipple-sparing double mastectomy, removal of lymph nodes and implants.

Episode 11 - Arthur Rosen
Reflexologist and Craniosacral Therapist - Testimony and Therapist
An interview with Arthur who is an ex Chartered Accountant, who “got sold” on the benefits of Therapeutic Reflexology, when it provided him with a permanent solution to Crohn’s disease. This belief inspired him to augment his knowledge and critical thinking skills about well-being, with craniosacral therapy. Arthur was also diagnosed with cancer in his eye, which caused him to lose his eyesight in the one eye and change his career. Arthur shares his journey with us. Arthur has helped many people manage their health, vitality and energy – energy is the key to a happy, healthy life. His method has been developed to solve health problems and improve the quality of peoples’ lives. The aim is to get patients to feel good. Patients receive personalised, effective lifestyle help to improve their health. Arthur comes from a place where he really wants to make the world a better place and he has had the joy of serving many clients and improving their lives.

Episode 8 - Dr Elvira Singh
Head: National Cancer Registry and the partnership with LWC
Dr Elvira Singh shares her views on the patient-led cancer registry that was launched on the 4th of February 2021. Dr Singh “It is essential that cancer patients take up a central role in reporting their experience of cancer diagnosis and care in South Africa. Currently, the National Cancer Registry (NCR) reports on the numbers of cancer patients diagnosed in laboratories and hospitals around the country. A Patient Led Cancer Registry will be an invaluable partner in assisting the NCR to describe the burden of cancer in South Africa through the incorporation of patient-reported data into our incidence analysis,” said Dr Elvira Singh: Head: National Cancer Registry: National Health Laboratory Service.

Episode 10 - Rajes Govender
B-Cell Non-Hodgkins's Lymphoma Testimony
Rajes was diagnosed with Stage 3, high grade, B-Cell Non-Hodgkins’s Lymphoma in 2018. After undergoing treatment in India and then continuing her treatment in South Africa, Rajes is now in remission and lives a healthy and normal life. Rajes shares her extended process of trying to obtain a diagnosis, her will to survive and her exploration into alternative treatment and lifestyle changes. Rajes says that for most people cancer does not have a face until it’s yours or someone you know.

Episode 12 - Oscar Chalupsky
Olympian and former World Surfski Champion
An interview with Oscar who was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2019, where he shares his journey, fears and how he continues to keep his fighting spirit in all he does. Determination, his competitive nature and disciplined approach to life (exercise, fasting and positive attitude) has carried Oscar through many hours of chemotherapy and radiation. Oscars is a voice for cancer and believes cancer is not a death sentence! A true inspiration for us all.

Episode 13 - Sandy Gordon
Cancer of the Pancreas
An interview with Sandy Gordon who was diagnosed 1st November 2021 with pancreatic cancer. Sandy is 39 years old and is a primary school teacher in Johannesburg. Sandy named her cancer Dennis as she felt it was just easier to refer to him by name rather than “my cancer”. Sandy found out about Dennis when she was admitted to hospital with Pancreatitis. The doctors found lesions on her liver, which turned out to be metastasised Pancreatic Cancer. She is currently undergoing Chemotherapy at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and fighting to make sure she is cancer free by September. Sandy shares with us that she has a wonderful army of supporters that keep her fighting. Sandy’s motto “One day, one fight at a time!”. A moving but inspirational story, which I was privileged to capture as part of our podcast series.

Episode 15 - Gill Kretzschmar
Melanoma Testimony
An interview with Gill Kretzschmar who has been on both sides of the fence: first as a caregiver to her late husband who battled cancer for four years and then as a cancer survivor of stage three melanoma. I had the pleasure of chatting to Gill about her journey where she shared how she has dedicated her life to giving back to the cancer community in the most profound way.

Episode 16 - Lisha Nunan
Papillary Carcinoma Cancer Warrior
An interview with Lisha, a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with papillary carcinoma at the age of 25. Lisha was living abroad at the time. However, she returned to SA for her treatment, which included a thyroidectomy and radioactive therapy.
Soon after her treatment Lisha went back to London to continue her life, which proved to be challenging as she struggled to heal properly. After an injury Lisha made the decision to return back to South Africa and now 15 years later has taken a holistic view if her life.
Lisha, an Art of Living practitioner, emphasises a holistic approach to well-being. Beyond diet, exercise, and healthy habits, she believes a strong mental outlook and mindful breathing are crucial. Lisha uses breathing techniques to manage emotions and detoxify her body. Meditation and yoga are integral to her routine, contributing to a life free from cancer.

Episode 18 - Louise Turner
Chief Operations Officer at Breast Health Foundation (BHF)
An interview with Louise Turner who is the Chief Operations Officer at Breast Health Foundation (BHF). In 2004, she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. “When I was diagnosed everything changed – a whole different world opened up for me. I met the most amazing people, because of breast cancer.” As a firm believer in the starfish principle, Louise says her job is very satisfying. “I trust that our efforts will make a difference to someone, somewhere in the world. People don’t have to go through everything all by themselves with no support and no educational infrastructure, that’s why BHF is here!” According to Louise South Africa’s social dynamics are such that, for every one woman who survives breast cancer, many more lives are affected positively. “That’s because there’s a husband or partner who is not widowed, children who are not orphaned, extended family members who are not grieving and countless friends who are educated.” Louise’s advice to people diagnosed with breast cancer is that it too shall pass. “Breast cancer is just another bump in the journey – it’s hell, but you get through it. Episode 20 - Monica Singer
Breast Cancer
Professor Monica Singer CA (SA) – Consensus senior strategy and Advisory Board Member at Global Digital Asset & Cryptocurrency Association, Monica was diagnosed in 2022 with breast cancer. She shares how cancer has impacted her life and how prevention is so much better than cure.
Monica believes that stress the cause her cancer, although there being a family history of cancer should she have been advised differently she feels she could have put measures in place to prevent her current situation. Monica believes that stress caused her cancer. Monica’s treatments include chemotherapy for the rest of her life, which she has embraced by ensuring her daily routine includes healthy eating, meditation, exercise, and vitamins. From enduring multiple rounds of chemotherapy, a mastectomy, and radiation delays due to systemic backlogs at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, Lydia faced a recurrence in May 2023. Despite the setback, she underwent another round of intensive treatment and surgery, emerging stronger than ever.
